Bonbon Double Cushion Sugarloaf Earrings

The sugarloaf is the cut that makes this one. A square base rising to a soft peak, every edge rounded and the whole dome left smooth — it is the shape of a sweet before anyone has touched it, and it is where the collection takes its name most literally.

A smooth dome treats light quite differently from a faceted table. Rather than returning it from the surface, the sugarloaf gathers it inward, so the eye travels into the stone and the colour arrives deep and even from peak to base. Against the faceted pieces in the collection, these earrings offer weight of colour: richer, quieter, and altogether more luscious.

The gold carries its own colour too. Each setting is finished by electroplating over a solid gold base, the colour deposited onto the metal itself, so the claws and gallery appear in pink, green, purple or blue rather than in ordinary gold. Most settings in fine jewellery are made to disappear behind the stone; these join the palette, and the earring reads in three colours instead of two.
