Scarlet Cascade Earrings

Ruby and blue sapphire are the same stone. Both are corundum, and what separates them is a single trace element arriving as the crystal grew — chromium for red, iron and titanium for blue. Everything else is identical. Two of the most coveted colours in the world, and the distance between them is that small.

The earring lays it out in a straight line. Four ovals on open links: blue sapphire at the ear, two rubies beneath, and the fullest sapphire of all at the base. Each stone swings against the next, so the line moves as the head does.

The blue holds both ends and the red sits entirely in the middle, and the proportion is what makes it sing. Red and blue in equal measure would compete; here the ruby arrives as warmth inside all that cool, and it is the truthful arrangement in mineral terms too — red corundum is the rarer of the two, and asks for no scale to assert itself.

At the ear, a fluted white gold disc, the pleats catching light across a plain surface. It is the one piece of worked metal in the earring, and it gives the lobe its presence so the stones below can stay entirely themselves. Every one of them is claw-set with the girdle left open, so light enters from behind and carries right through.

White gold throughout, chosen so no warmth is added to either colour. Long enough to move with the head, narrow enough to stay a line.
