Peacock Earrings

The peacock exists to be looked at. Its display is the most extravagant thing nature produces for no purpose beyond being admired, and the earring is built exactly as the bird is: a small, precise head, and behind it a fan out of all proportion to it.

The head is enamelled and modelled in the round. A crest of fine white gold pins tipped in turquoise, an eye outlined in white, a beak drawn in a single line, and a neck curving back on itself in blue-green that shades down to gold at the breast. The enamel work carries the colour of the bird with the delicacy of painting — the shading from throat to breast is graded by hand — and the whole of it holds without a single stone. This is the anatomically observed part of the piece, and the most exacting.

Below, the tail opens in white gold set with diamond, sapphire cabochons running along its length and a pear cabochon at every tip. It hangs in graduated lengths so the outline reads as a true arc, and it swings on its own while the head stays fixed: the fan moves, the bird holds still, which is precisely what a peacock does when it displays.

The sapphires are cut as cabochons rather than faceted, and that is what allows the tail to read as plumage. A faceted stone returns light in points; a cabochon gathers it into a single soft dome. Across nearly sixteen carats the effect is depth rather than glitter — far closer to how the eye of a peacock feather actually behaves, a blue-green that shifts as you move.

Every one of those cabochons is matched to a single blue. Tone, saturation and dome are consistent from the first stone to the last, so the whole length of the tail carries one continuous colour and the graduation is read in the shape of the fan rather than in any drift of hue. Gathering that many cabochons in agreement means sorting through a great many more, and it is the reason the tail holds together as one plume.

The tail detaches. Released from the head, the enamelled peacock remains at the lobe and is worn alone as a stud — the bird folds its display away and is still entirely the bird. Most detachable earrings leave a plain fitting behind; this one leaves a sculpture, and gives the wearer two quite different pieces: a sculptural day earring, and the full 70-millimetre drop for the evening.
