Dancin’ Gal Charm Pendant

She dances as you do. The skirt hangs free of the body, so the moment the pendant is worn she turns at the neck — a figure caught mid-movement, and genuinely moving.

That is the idea the whole piece rests on. A dancer rendered in metal is usually a dancer stopped: the pose fixed, the movement implied, the wearer asked to imagine the rest. Eve builds the movement in instead, and lets the wearer supply it simply by being alive. The pendant is never quite the same twice, and it is at its best in motion rather than in a photograph.

Her face is a heart of mother of pearl. The shell shifts through its own soft colours as the light crosses it — pink, cream, the faintest green — so her expression changes with the turn of the head.

The skirt is cut from the same material: seventeen tapered pieces of mother of pearl, graded from the narrowest at the waist to the widest at the hem, fanned into a full circle. Shell was chosen for the way it holds light along a curve, so as the skirt swings the sheen runs across all seventeen pieces at once. Rubies are set across it in small rounds, a fine red order laid over a shape built to move.

And she is drawn with real economy. A heart for a face, a fan for a skirt, a line for a leg — a few clear shapes, and a girl mid-step arrives complete. The figure assembles herself in the eye of whoever is looking, which is how one remembers a dance rather than a pose.
