Summer Over Santorini Earrings
Anyone who has watched the sun go down over Santorini knows the colours arrive all at once: the sky turning warm above, gold and rose spreading across it, and the Aegean holding its deep blue below, entirely unmoved by any of it. Warm above, cool beneath, and the line between them the reason people go.
The earring is built in that order. A peridot at the ear, a morganite below it in soft rose, and at the foot a blue topaz of some twenty carats — the water, and the largest stone in the piece.
Three golds carry three hours of the same evening. Yellow at the peridot, rose at the morganite, white at the topaz: warm where the light still falls on the face, cooling as the drop descends. That sequence is the whole reason for working three metals in one earring, and it runs in that order for that reason alone.
The pair is deliberately mismatched, and the summer is in the difference. On one earring a butterfly has come to rest on the peridot; on the other, a flower opens just beneath it. Two small moments from the same afternoon, one at each ear — the ease of the season, and something quite affectionate in it.
The sunset is mismatched too. One topaz sits within a full octagonal diamond frame that follows every facet edge, the sky closed over once the sun has gone. The other is held on open rose gold claws with the girdle bare, a single pavé band spilling across the crown before it stops: the last light still on the water. Worn together, the two ears are the same view ten minutes apart.
Round sapphires and brilliant diamonds run through the settings. A drop of 50 by 18 millimetres, in 14-karat rose, yellow and white gold.
