Blue Fathom Earrings
A fish, quite still, at the centre of a ring of pearls that will not keep still at all. They gather close along the upper curve, then loosen and fall away beneath on fine chains, each swinging to its own time, so that the whole ring stirs around a creature that does not move. Water, in other words, behaving as water does around something at rest in it.
Above, a shell rests at the ear. Between the two, a brief descent of sapphire, opal and sapphire, the drop drawing itself narrower as it falls.
Shell and fish alike have been carved from Swiss blue topaz, and carved is the word — no facets anywhere, only form. A faceted stone hands light straight back at you. A carved one invites it in, lets it travel the full depth of the body and rise again through the fluting of the shell, along the fins, over the fine ridge of each scale. The fish is not a pattern on a surface. It is a fish, seen through blue water, with the light already inside it.
The proportions are the reverse of what the eye anticipates: the shell nearest the ear is the smaller, the fish furthest away the larger. That single inversion is what turns a drop into a distance, and it is precisely how the sea presents things — the near one modest, the far one looming.
Halfway down, the opal alone breaks the blue, a pale stone that throws green and gold as it turns.
White gold holds all of it and asks for nothing. 62 by 25 millimetres.
