Azure Tide Earrings

Three sapphires to each ear in a deep, saturated blue — an oval of 7 by 5 millimetres at the lobe, two of 4 by 3 beneath, 3.81 carats across the pair. Each claw-set with the girdle left open, so light enters from behind and travels the full depth of the stone.

Pearls fall between them: a 5-millimetre round below the first sapphire, a 4-millimetre below the second, each on its own link so the line articulates the whole way down. Faceted against smooth, blue against white. At 20 millimetres wide, the alternation is all the piece needs.

The pear-cut topaz below, some 56 carats, wears its pearls on the girdle — 3-millimetre rounds set directly on the edge of the stone, raised on fine white gold claws that reach round from behind, so the ornament follows the outline of the gem rather than ringing it. A bezel would have enclosed the stone. This releases it.

Sixteen pearls across the pair, in three sizes, and this is the only point at which they meet a stone. The two blues stay at full strength — navy above, clear pale water below — with the pearls between them, white and opaque, so each holds its own.
