Emerald Cascade Ring

Every diamond in this ring has a straight edge. The halo, the shoulders, the whole architecture is built from baguettes, and that single decision gives the ring its clean Deco geometry.

At the centre, a Colombian emerald of 3.45 carats, square with the corners taken off. This is the emerald cut in its proper sense: a step cut with broad flat planes and an open table, the one cut that invites you to look straight into the stone. Colombia gives the green its particular warmth, and a cut this open is reserved for material worth looking into.

The halo is the finer piece of work. Tapered baguettes are channel-set in a continuous ring, each narrowing towards the centre so the line turns the corners of a cushion outline and closes perfectly at every joint. A round stone can be eased into position; a straight-edged one meets its neighbour exactly. From there the shoulders step down in three tiers on either side, squaring off as they descend — the stepped setback of a Deco façade, worked in diamond.

Four heavy claws hold the emerald at its corners rather than along its sides, leaving the full width of the stone in view and putting the metal where the cut is strongest.

A table of 12 by 13 millimetres, in 18-karat white gold.
