Pretty in Pink – Daisy Ring

A daisy, drawn with the proportions of a real one. Each diamond sits in its own bezel with a milgrain edge, set a little apart from its neighbour, and every collet is scalloped so the outer edge of the ring runs as a line of curves. Petals, in other words, rather than a border.

The proportion is what gives it away. On a daisy the eye is small and the petals generous, and this ring follows the flower: the diamonds have real presence, and the white reads as a flower head in its own right.

At the centre, a Burmese ruby, oval-cut and pink rather than the deep red the name tends to suggest. That is the colour the stone arrived at, and the ring is built around it — white metal throughout, which keeps the pink clear, and a centre held in claws so light reaches the stone from every side.

Milgrain runs around each collet and along the small stepped detail at either shoulder, a fine beaded edge worked with a knurling wheel, the finish used on cluster rings of the early twentieth century. It softens the meeting of stone and metal, and at this scale it is what gives the ring its hand-made quality.

The shank is plain, round and narrow. Everything the ring has to say is at the top.

The result is a classic in the proper sense. It goes with everything, it suits every hour of the day, and it will be as right in twenty years as it is now — the sort of ring that is put on in the morning and simply stays there.
