Scarlet Cascade Pendant

Ruby and blue sapphire are the same stone. Both are corundum, and what separates them is a single trace element arriving as the crystal grew — chromium for red, iron and titanium for blue. Everything else is identical. Two of the most coveted colours in the world, and the distance between them is that small.

The pendant sets it out as a single descending line. Ovals of blue sapphire carry the length, growing as they fall, and among them the rubies appear small and warm — a little red held inside all that cool.

The proportion is deliberate. Nearly nine parts sapphire to one of ruby, so the red arrives as warmth rather than as a rival, which is the honest arrangement in mineral terms too: red corundum is the rarer of the two, and asks for no scale to assert itself.

Narrow at six millimetres and thirty-three long, it reads as a line at the throat and sits easily beneath a collar. In 14-karat white gold, chosen so no warmth is added to either colour.

Worn with the Scarlet Cascade Earrings, the two carry the same conversation between red and blue.

From The Regal Line: the great colours, simply set, and made to be worn often.

Ruby and blue sapphire are the same mineral, separated only by which trace element reached the crystal first. The contrast here is colour and nothing else.
