Spring Bloom Earrings

At the ear, a peridot carved as a flower caught in the act of opening. Ten millimetres across, the petals furl in on themselves rather than lying flat — a bloom on its way out, rather than one fully out — and carving is what makes that possible. Light runs down into the folds instead of returning from a table, so the green deepens in the hollows and lifts along the ridges as the head turns.

Peridot asks a great deal of a carver. It is a softer stone than sapphire, it carries inclusions, and its marked double refraction blurs fine detail. Bringing a form this defined out of the material takes a cutter who knows it intimately, and the flower is the finest work in the piece.

The carved head rests in a fluted white gold cup with three small diamond-set leaves reaching up around its rim. From there the drop runs short and precise: a bezelled round diamond, an oval pink sapphire, a second diamond, and then the quartz.

At the base, the longest element in the earring — a rose quartz drop of 17 by 6 millimetres, polished smooth and left entirely plain. Rose quartz is translucent rather than transparent, and its colour comes from inclusions within the stone rather than from the lattice, which is why it glows from inside instead of flashing at the surface. Kept plain and elongated, it gives the earring exactly what it needs at the foot: presence, quietly held.

Green at the top, then pink twice over at two quite different intensities — a small, saturated sapphire, and beneath it a pale quartz many times its weight. Bright and small, then large and still: the reverse of how most drops are built, and far more interesting for it.
