Kinetic Blossom Ring

Turn the centre of the flower and it moves. Not a single stone spinning loose in a collar, but the entire head — centre stone, sapphires and diamonds together — mounted to rotate as one against the petals beneath.

That is a different order of work altogether. Every stone in the head has to hold through daily handling, and the whole assembly must run true against its base, sweetly and without catching. It is jewellery built with a mechanism inside it, which is what Kinetic is for.

The petals are mother of pearl, two pieces cut to shape. Nacre grows in fine layers that break light apart rather than returning it whole, so the surface shifts through cream and pink and the palest green as the hand moves. The petals hold still while the centre turns above them.

It is made two ways. With a ruby at the heart, the warmth takes the eye first and the flower gathers around it. With an emerald, the green sits closer to the shell in weight, and the centre belongs to the flower rather than commanding it.

A face of 25 by 26 millimetres, in 14-karat gold — white with the ruby, yellow with the emerald.
