Rouge Rhapsody Earrings

These earrings are made entirely of links. Every haloed ruby, every open ring, every bezelled diamond and connecting bar hangs from the one above it on a jointed pivot, and three strands fall from a horizontal diamond bar, each swinging free of the other two along its full sixty millimetres. Where a pierced panel would move as one plate, this moves as a curtain.

The rubies are the fixed points, the diamonds the rhythm. Ovals and pears at 4.53 carats across the pair, each held in a close diamond halo that follows the outline of its stone — oval around an oval, pear around a pear — so the ruby’s shape is doubled rather than merely framed.

Between them, open rings of diamond pavé with their centres left clear: the same halos, without the stone. Down each strand they alternate with the set rubies, full and open, full and open, and the eye reads a rhythm rather than a simple descent.

At 2.45 carats the diamond is more than half the weight of the ruby, and nearly all of it sits in halos, rings and bezels. It is doing the structural work as well as the decorative — the open rings are the links of the chandelier and its ornament at once.

At the lobe, a fluted white gold shell with its pleats radiating behind a haloed ruby. It is the single solid element, and everything else in the earring hangs from it.

Sixty by fifteen millimetres in 14-karat white gold: long, narrow, and very nearly all air.
