Spinning Lotus Ring

Turn the lotus and it opens beneath your fingers. A blue topaz of 10.04 carats, carved as a flower and mounted to rotate within its setting, so the petals travel under the eye and the bloom takes a new position with every turn.

The carving is what makes the movement visible. A carved stone has a face and a profile, and the eye reads those as shape rather than as sparkle, so the rotation registers as real motion. The same mount holding a faceted stone would turn and turn, and the hand would never quite believe it.

Ten carats is a generous amount of material to carry into a carving and bring out whole. The wheel works down into relief rather than across a flat table, and the lotus is drawn out of the stone itself — a single gem doing the work an entire cluster usually does, and the reason the ring reads so calmly.

A smaller blue topaz sits alongside, with round brilliant diamonds set into the band. The band stays entirely still: everything that moves is at the centre, everything that carries the ring is fixed.

In 14-karat white gold, kept plain for a stone whose interest is its form.

Description & Details

On most spinning rings the moving element is symmetrical, so the motion is felt rather than seen. This one turns a carved lotus of just over ten carats, and the petals make the rotation legible.
