Celestial Leaf Lapel Pins/Earrings
A leaf drawn as veins alone. A central stem runs the length of the piece with side veins branching from it, each a fine line of pavé diamond tapering to a polished point, and the spaces between them left open to the air. The colour travels along the structure, and the light passes straight through.
Ruby and blue sapphire sit among those veins in ovals from 3 to 9.5 millimetres — 15.09 carats of corundum across the pair — red beside blue, the largest stones gathered where the piece is widest and the smaller ones running out along the lower veins. The sizes step irregularly, so the arrangement reads as growth.
The two halves are deliberately unalike. One is headed by a bezelled ruby, the other by a bezelled blue sapphire, and the stones beneath fall differently on each — a pair by construction, and either one complete on its own.
At the top of each sits a pierced roundel worked as a geometric fret, set against the pavé stem: the one regular, closed figure in a piece built on irregular branching, and it holds everything in place. Worn as a brooch, it becomes the head of the design.
Six pearls hang from the veins on fine links, three to each half. They are the only parts that move and the only matte surface among faceted corundum and pavé, and they swing below the tips, so the outline of the leaf keeps shifting.
This pair is designed to be worn two ways: as a pair of earrings, or as a pair of pins. The fitting on the back of each leaf folds flush against the body, and the piece becomes a brooch — worn singly on a lapel or a coat, or as two together. As a pin it suits a man as readily as a woman.
At 57 by 29 millimetres it is scaled for both, and the openwork is what lets it carry 15 carats of corundum and still hang light from a lobe. In 14-karat white gold.
