Evening Primrose – Blue Sapphire Ring

The band curves round the finger and stays open at the tail, weighted at one end and tapering away at the other, exactly as a stem carries a flower. Eve has taken the evening primrose (Oenothera) from the stalk here rather than from the bloom.

At the head of it, a single oval blue sapphire of 8.3 by 7 millimetres, and around that a petal laid in tiny invisibly set sapphires — each stone grooved along the girdle and locked to a framework beneath, so the petal reads as one continuous field of blue. Invisible setting is among the most exacting work in the trade, and here it is carried round a curve. Total sapphire weight is 4.25 carats.

The leaves are blue chalcedony, hand-carved and generously scaled at 10 to 12 millimetres — a size a ring can accommodate and an earring would struggle to — cut thin enough for light to travel through, so they glow where the sapphires hold colour.

Along the band, smaller round sapphires run with brilliant diamonds, carrying the line all the way to the open tail.

26 by 26 millimetres, in 14-karat white gold.
