Evening Primrose – Blue Sapphire Earrings

The blue arrives as a single sheet of colour. Small sapphires are invisibly set into one unbroken plane — each stone grooved along its girdle and locked to a framework beneath, stone meeting stone across the whole surface — so the petal carries its blue as one continuous field. It is among the most exacting work in the trade, and it is the reason this earring reads the way it does.

At the centre of each, an oval blue sapphire chosen for the depth of its colour. Sapphire runs to 7.65 carats across the pair.

The leaves are blue chalcedony, hand-carved, translucent enough to carry light where the sapphire holds colour. Down the stem, tiny round sapphires run with brilliant diamonds, drawing the line to the foot of the drop.

The evening primrose (Oenothera) flowers at dusk and opens over the course of a few minutes. Eve designs to that hour rather than to the outline of the bloom: colour at its most saturated where the flower would be open, the cooler light of the chalcedony gathered around it.

A drop of 35 by 20 millimetres, in 14-karat white gold.
