Rosé Dusk Earrings

An intense blue set between two warm stones, and the whole earring turns on it.

At the ear, a garnet of 5.21 carats in a red so deep it approaches black at the rim and opens to bright orange-red where light finds the centre. Behind it, an openwork rose gold scroll, visible from certain angles.

Below, a rose quartz of 11.62 carats, octagon-cut and step-faceted with long flat planes. Rose quartz is translucent, its colour carried in fine inclusions through the body of the stone, so it diffuses light rather than returning it — and the step cut is exactly right for that. The broad facets read as pale planes and the stone glows.

Between the two sits a round blue sapphire of 3.5 millimetres, saturated and cool. It is a fraction of the size of either stone it separates, and it does the work of a full third colour: red above, pink below, and a clear cold note holding the interval between them.

Rose gold throughout, and the only metal that would carry all three. Against the garnet it deepens the red; against the rose quartz it slips into the pink; against the sapphire it makes the one warm-to-cold meeting in the piece — which is precisely where the eye stops.

The drop measures 22 by 12 millimetres.
