Lotus Reverie Earrings

At the lobe, an amethyst carved as a lotus. The flower is worked from directly above, petals radiating out from the centre and cut in relief into the face of the gem — a carved stone rather than a faceted one, so the colour lies in the form itself and deepens where the petals overlap.

Directly beneath, a garnet carved as the same lotus at roughly half the scale. The flower appears twice in every earring, in two sizes and two colours: deep purple above, deep red below.

Diamonds are then bezelled into the carving itself, at the points where the petals meet, held on fine rose gold arms that follow the lines already cut in the stone. The metal grows out of the flower rather than resting upon it. It is a sequence of real accomplishment — the stone is carved and finished first, and each setting is then drilled and fitted into that completed surface. Carved gems are usually left plain for exactly this reason, which makes diamond-set carving of this kind a rarity at any price.

At the foot of the drop, the largest stone answers both: a smooth oval cabochon of green amethyst — prasiolite — in a pale, almost translucent green, its surface left entirely plain. Above it sits a pavé cap worked as lotus petals folding down over the crown: the same flower a third time, now rendered in metal and closing over the stone rather than opening into it.

Flowers and leaves run the length of the earring, each element linked to the next, and the whole reads as a single growing stem.

The colours run deep purple, deep red, pale green; the sizes run large, small, largest. Neither sequence is regular, which is what gives the drop its life.

Rose gold throughout. Against the amethyst and the pale green it is the warm line that holds two cool colours together, and it is the reason three stones in three unrelated colours read as one object.
