Pretty in Pink – Orchid Ring

An oval stone within a round halo. Because the surround takes its own shape rather than following the outline of the centre, the diamonds gather close at the ends and open out at the sides, and the head reads as a circle with an oval floating inside it.

Either side, a trilliant diamond is set point inward, its flat edge outward, the two triangles bracketing the halo. Trilliants are cut with long shallow facets, so they read as broad planes of white — a different quality of light from the round stones beside them, and what allows the shoulders to hold their own beside a saturated centre.

From there the shoulders run on in pavé, tapering to a point at either end with a milgrain edge. Three distinct passages in one setting — round halo, triangular shoulders, tapered pavé — and the eye reads them outward, in that order.

White metal throughout. The pink is intense, and against white the colour is left to carry the entire ring.

A classic of the simplest kind: it goes with everything, suits any hour of the day, and asks nothing of the wearer beyond putting it on.
