Coral Reef Earrings

The coral keeps its natural form. Rather than cutting the branch to a template, Eve has worked with the shape it already had, which is why the two earrings are not twins and why each fork opens at its own angle. Twenty carats of coral to the pair.

A Mexican fire opal, cabochon-cut and ringed in diamond, holds the ear, orange with a flicker running through it. Beneath comes an octagonal Colombian emerald, and beneath that the branch itself, opening away from the face with an emerald swinging free at each tip.

Yellow sapphire pavé follows the length of each arm rather than crossing it. Gold would sit too close to the coral’s own colour to register; yellow sapphire keeps its voice while staying inside the warm range, so the pavé reads as light travelling along the branch.

The emeralds are the counterweight. Green faces red directly across the colour wheel, and Eve stages that meeting at the extremities — at the very ends of the drop, well clear of the coral’s mass — leaving the centre entirely warm.

62 by 33 millimetres in yellow gold, wide as well as long. The weight is carried at the ear, in the opal and its setting; everything below hangs light and moves as the wearer does.

Worn with the Coral Reef Pendant, the branches read as a single growth.
