Spinning Lotus Stud Earrings

A lotus seen from directly above, carved into blue topaz — petals cut in relief, layered and overlapping, folding inward to a raised heart. Ten millimetres across, and 10.67 carats to the pair.

Topaz is transparent, and that is what gives the carving its depth. The cut lines are read from within the stone as well as across its surface, so the petals appear to have layers beneath them rather than sitting on a face. It is the effect only carving achieves.

The setting holds each flower in three sweeping arms rather than claws. Each rises from behind and curves over the girdle in the shape of a petal, answering the carving without repeating it, so the metal joins the flower rather than fixing it in place. The arms carry the only set stones in the earring: pavé diamonds alternating with small blue topaz along their length — blue against white on the metal, blue in the stone beneath, the same two colours in two different states.

The carved face is left entirely to itself.

They belong to the Spinning Lotus series, named for the ring, where the carved flower turns within its setting. The earrings share the design and the carving; worn as studs, they sit close and still at the ear.

At 10 by 10 millimetres these are studs, and they carry more than eleven carats of topaz at that size.
